Chelsea and RB Leipzig have been in talks over a move for Xavi Simons for several weeks, with the 22-year-old already agreeing personal terms.
It’s understood the Premier League club need to sell before completing a deal for the highly rated Dutch playmaker, with Nkunku, 27, touted as one of the players that need to leave.
According to The Athletic, Leipzig are stepping up their pursuit of the French forward, who is keen on returning to the Bundesliga club.
Leipzig’s move for Nkunku will likely give Chelsea the necessary freedom to complete their deal for Simons.
Bayern Munich are also understood to be interested in Nkunku having had a loan bid turned down by Chelsea earlier in the summer.
