According to iNews, Chelsea have moved ahead of Newcastle in the race to sign him after reaching out to the midfielder’s representatives.
It’s understood that Smit could be available for around £25 million, with Spanish duo Real Madrid and Barcelona also interested.
Fellow Premier League sides Tottenham and Man United are keen, but are currently prioritising other targets.
