Manchester United boss Michael Carrick admits a shift in transfer plans is now underway.

With Ruben Amorim removed and his back three system also gone, Carrick  has revealed United are now reverting a winger-based attack.

As such, United will be shopping for wide players this summer after the departure of Alejandro Garnacho to Chelsea last year and also the imminent sale of Marcus Rashford to loan club Barcelona. Jadon Sancho is in the same position at Aston Villa.

Asked about the need to strengthen the club's winger options, Carrick said on Tuesday: "I think you're always looking at the balance of the team and the squad to give you the utmost flexibility, so it's definitely something to look at, for sure."

Pressed again, Carrick said: "Quite possibly."

He continued: "We can still be dangerous.

"Matheus (Cunha) has played that role and caused big problems and had big moments. When he plays wide, he is tough to stop one-on-one."

Indeed, Carrick remains confident his squad has the options to cover the shortfall before United can take action in June.

"We're always thinking of that perfect scenario of mixing players together and connections and seeing how it suits on the pitch," he said.

"There's different ways of doing it and we have really good options across the front line."
