Dominic Calvert-Lewin believes Leeds United’s performance against Tottenham Hotspur showed plenty of positives despite their narrow 2-1 defeat.

Noah Okafor had given the hosts the lead in the first half at Elland Road, but goals from Mathys Tel and Mohammed Kudus turned the game around for Spurs.“It is a frustrating afternoon, given the work we put in to get ourselves in a good position. I think probably Spurs scored against the run of play and then we worked hard,” Calvert-Lewin told the club website.

“There were chances from myself and others that on another day we should put in the back of the net, and ultimately this is the Premier League so you get punished.

“When I get chances, I expect myself to put them away so no one expects more from myself than myself.

“I wouldn't say pressure, just expectation from ourselves to continue the momentum that we have built.

“I think we should have got a better result against Bournemouth and we went into this game full of confidence as we will go into the next one.”

Nevertheless, Calvert-Lewin insists there is no reason for discouragement, stressing that the display highlighted the team’s growing potential.

The former Everton star added: “As a newly promoted side, people statistically say it is going to be harder for us than it is for other teams that are already in the Premier League.

“But I think we have showcased what we are capable of and how we can compete at this level and even against teams like Spurs and Newcastle, these good established Premier League sides that play in Europe.

“I think it is important to stay balanced. When you win, it is important not to get carried away. When you lose, it is important to not get too down about it.

“It is a long season. There are 31 games left and 31 chances for us to go and get three points.”

The result leaves Leeds with eight points from seven matches heading into the international break.
