Newcastle United defender Dan Burn has called for his side to step up in the final stage of the season.

Seven Premier League matches remain for Newcastle as manager Eddie Howe chases down European football after a successful Champions League run this season.

Their exit to Barcelona was followed up by a devastating home defeat to Sunderland in the Tyne-Wear derby, putting pressure on Howe to finish the campaign by securing a spot in Europe.

Howe and his players were booed after that 2-1 defeat to Newcastle and now Burn, one of Howe’s most integral players has called for the side to push to be their best in the final stretch of the campaign.

"We need to get our minds back on to the Premier League pretty quickly. We have seven games and I have said it many times before, we are a better team when we have a week between games, and have time to train.

“We want to put in some really good training between now and the end of the season. And I'm still hoping we can get a European place."

"It is still very tight in the Premier League. It is the type of league where everyone beats everyone. I'd still back us against anybody when we play well. We will be looking to turn around our form and really attack the end of the season.

"That is looking pretty slim now. To get back-to-back European seasons would still be good for us. We have full belief in ourselves."

Having crashed out of the Carabao Cup, FA Cup and Champions League in the space of six weeks, European football is imperative to call this season a success.

If it is not achieved, Howe may be in serious trouble heading into the summer as the board are reportedly already discussing his future.
