Former Chelsea star Ross Barkely has opened up on alcohol and Frank Lampard's punishment during his time at the club.

The midfielder is currently enjoying his time in Birmingham at Aston Villa under manager Unai Emery at the age of 31 as he continues to thrive in the Premier League. He recently stated that he wants to play for at least four more years, in what is an ambitious target for the veteran.

In an interview with The Athletic, Barkley has opened up on his troubles throughout his career, and more specifically with alcohol.

“I haven't drunk since summer,” Barkley said as he explained his decision to stop drinking. “It has created situations I don't really want happening anymore.

“Alcohol, for most people, can create problems - I've recognised that now,” Barkley added. “Without drinking, it doesn't create any situations. You can be clear-minded every day and it doesn't affect you mentally. There are a lot of benefits to not doing that.”

Frank's words stuck with him

The former England star then revealed that former Chelsea Lampard had offered him advice in the past that has stuck with him ever since and has led to his sobriety.

“A few times I went out, and if you drink too much, you do things you regret. I’d go out and have too much to drink, and then it would get back to the club. One time, I went out on a Sunday in Liverpool and we had a game on a Wednesday. I got videoed, and then it was in the paper.

“We (Chelsea) had an away game in France (against Lille) and Frank Lampard was the manager. He couldn’t really say too much to me, other than learn from it and pick and choose when the right time is to do it, because he knew what it was like as a young lad.

“But the punishment was that I travelled with the team, but I wasn’t on the bench. I had to watch the game on the coach. It was hard to take. That was one occasion that has probably created a perception.”

Barkley has since made five appearances in the Premier League under Emery, scoring his first goal of the campaign on Sunday against Bournemouth in his side's 4-0 win against the Cherries, as he thrives without substance abuse.
