Watford are exploring a deal to re-sign ex-England and Manchester United star Ashley Young in what would be a fairytale return.

Watford are exploring a deal to re-sign Young, according to talkSPORT who report that the 40 year old is keen to end his career at the club where it started. The Hornets have no concerns over his age or fitness, but a final decision rests with manager Paulo Pezzolano who may want to bring in younger talent who have a brighter future.

The former England international, who represented the Three Lions on 39 occasions could be a huge boost for Watford that finished an unremarkable 14th place in the Championship last season and will now be hoping to push for promotion.

Young could help them in that regard after helping Watford gain promotion to the Premier League in 2006 before leaving to join Aston Villa. Watford have brought in six players so far this summer, with Nathan Baxter, Marc Bola and Hector Kyprianou all joining on free transfers and Young would fit that transfer strategy as he hopes to use his experience with what is a young Watford side.

He made 32 Premier League appearances last season, proving his fitness is as good as ever despite many questioning his age. Young recently spoke on his future and suggested there is a lot more to come even if many have written him off.

“It's been one of those things where I've played so much this season.

“I feel so fit. I've not felt as fit as I have done for years. I just want to continue playing, however that may look, however that may seem, I'm not ready to retire.

“I'm definitely going to carry on next season. Whichever way that is. I'm not getting any younger. I'm going to be 40 in July.

“I feel as fit as when I was in my 20s. I'm definitely going to continue. The stats are there - I've played 31 times this season and I feel I can keep going.”
