Estêvão had already converted a penalty in the 44th minute of the encounter against Tunisia in Lille, France, to level the score, 1-1.
However, when Brazil were handed another penalty in the 78th minute after Ferjani Sassi fouled Vitor Roque, Ancelotti ordered Estevao to allow West Ham United’s Lucas Paqueta to take the spot kick.
Why did Ancelotti order Estevao not to take it?
Ancelotti explained why he ordered Estevao after the game and revealed it was to ease pressure on the 18-year-old.
"Paqueta was the penalty taker. For the second penalty, I changed because I wanted to take some of the pressure off Estevao, so I put Paquetá in, who usually takes them very well."
"I have a lot of confidence in this team, in these players, and especially in this environment, which is a good environment. The players are serious, professional, and patriotic. They have a lot of affection for the shirt, and these are very important aspects."
Estevao wanted to take the penalty
Estevao also spoke to the media after the game had ended, revealing that he would have loved to bag another goal from the center spot.
"It was an order that came," Estêvão said.
"I really wanted to take the spot-kick, but the order came in. I supported my teammate so he could score the goal. Unfortunately, he missed, but heads held high, we have to train, improve because in a World Cup we have to take advantage of these opportunities."
Brazil will have two more friendlies in the March international break before the World Cup next year where they will try to claim the trophy for the first time since 2002.
