A disappointing 1-0 loss to Turkish giants Galatasaray was compounded when Alisson had to be taken off in the second half for summer signing Giorgi Mamardashvili who is set to make his Premier League debut against Chelsea.
As reported by The Athletic, the Brazil international is set to undergo a scan on Thursday as fears rise whether or not he could miss some crucial fixtures later this month.
These fixtures include clashes with Manchester United, Frankfurt, Brentford, Crystal Palace and Aston Villa. Speaking after the game, manager Arne Slot gave an insight into the injury.
“When he sprinted back he felt something. I cannot tell you (exactly) because I am not a physio, but normally when a player when he sprints back, feels something, goes to the floor and doesn’t come back onto the pitch (it’s not good).
“If my player is on the floor, I nine out of 10 times fear the worst—and by the worst I mean he cannot continue. That’s what happened with Alisson.”
The goalkeeper has been sidelined for significant periods in the past two seasons due to constant hamstring problems, and his latest injury left him out of the side for two months.
Slot may have to rely on Mamardashvili for the foreseeable future, but the Georgian should have the experience necessary to fill the gap.
