Zinchenko spent the first half of the season on loan at Nottingham Forest, but they cancelled it in late January after it revealed he was unhappy at the club.
The Ukrainian then joined Ajax on a 6-month deal but has had a horrific start after injuring his left knee with just two-and-a-half minutes on the clock in Ajax's 4-1 win over Fortuna Sittard on Saturday night.
The injury means he will miss the upcoming FIFA World Cup with Ukraine, who will face Sweden and Poland/Albania in the World Cup play-offs later this month.
Ajax confirmed the news on Monday afternoon in what is a huge setback for the 29-year-old, who can’t seem to get his career on track.
“Oleksandr Zinchenko has been ruled out for an extended period.
“The defender suffered a knee injury last weekend in the early stages of the home match with Fortuna Sittard at the Johan Cruijff ArenA.
“Examination at the hospital has shown that surgery is required. This will take place in the near future.
“The 29-year-old Ukraine international will then face a lengthy rehabilitation period, which means he will not play again this season.”
Zinchenko made just 10 appearances across all competitions for Forest and with his season over, he may not feature for Ajax for more than 90 minutes in total if he is released.
