Ruben Loftus-Cheek has been recalled the England squad for the first time since 2018 in a shock move from manager Thomas Tuchel.

This comes after Crystal Palace midfielder Adam Wharton pulled out of the squad on the back of being taken off injured during his side's 3-0 win away to Aston Villa last weekend in what is said to be a groin injury.

Loftus-Cheek is a straight replacement for Wharton, and the ex-Chelsea star has started the season in good form with the Rossoneri and even netted in Friday night's 2-0 win at Lecce as Milan climbed up to eighth place. The midfielder made 46 appearances for the Blues under Tuchel's guidance, scoring one goal and registering five assists.

Loftus-Cheek, 29, has played 10 times for England but has not won a cap since November 2018 and last featured as a substitute in a game against the United States. Reports suggest that Tuchel is a long-term admirer of Loftus-Cheek's blend of physical power and technical skill which explains the quick call-up.

The Three Lions face Andorra at home on September 6th and Serbia away three days later in World Cup qualifiers this month in two games where Loftus-Cheek could feature for his country ahead of next summer’s World Cup.
