Rooney’s first senior coaching job came at Derby County in the English Championship, before he resigned in 2022 after the club were relegated following a 21 point deduction for financial breaches.
Since then, Rooney has gone on to manage D.C United in the MLS across the pond, Birmingham City, and finally Plymouth Argyle wehre he won just a handful of games and was sacked in less than a year back in December 2024.
Rooney, speaking on The Smith Bros YouTube channel, has opened up on how he may not return to the touchline anytime soon as he focuses on his family.
"I would, I definitely would if the right thing came up," he said when asked about a potential comeback. "But I wouldn't put myself in situations like (when I lived) in DC, lived in Plymouth, lived in Birmingham, lived away and missed a lot of my kids' football and stuff.
"That means it has to be the right thing, and for it to be the right thing, and realistic as well," he added. "With the four jobs I've done, is that gonna come up? Which I doubt, so (a comeback becomes more complicated)."
Rooney regularly features on Match of the Day, Sky Sports and various podcasts including his own which he started last year. A return to management is unlikely as he sticks close to his family and TV work which seems to suit him just fine.
