The 29-year-old has had a remarkable fall from grace since heading to Tottenham on loan, scoring just three goals since January 2024.
Werner is currently back at RB Leipzig but has only featured once so far this season, a one-minute substitute appearance in their 1-0 win over Wolfsburg in September.
He came close to joining sister club New York Red Bulls in the summer, but Werner’s wage demands saw the move fall through.
Speaking to The Athletic newly appointed Red Bulls head of sport Julian de Guzman addressed the decision to walk away from the Werner opportunity. “There was always talks about (Werner).”
“We have to make sure, here in New York, it makes sense for us. It’s a great name to bring, I think fans would have loved him.
“The opportunity was there, but I don’t think we were 100 percent sold that this was the right thing for New York. That’s why it wasn’t something we were fully invested in. We’d rather be patient (with that DP spot),” he added.
