The 38-year-old is out of contract at Inter Miami at the end of the year, but several reports have suggested Messi is in talks to extend his stay.
Messi has been integral to everything the club has done since joining back in the summer of 2023, winning the Leagues Cup that year along the way.
Speaking to the press ahead of their MLS clash with DC United on Saturday (September 20), Mascherano refused to be drawn into the speculation.
“I’m not going to speak about hypotheticals, and I’m certainly not the one who should make that announcement,” Mascherano told reporters on Friday.
“Hopefully it happens soon. It would be fantastic news not only for the club but for MLS and soccer in the United States as a whole. We just have to let things take their natural course and allow those who need to announce it to do so.”
