Former Barcelona coach Xavi has launched an extraordinary attack on club president Joan Laporta.

Xavi was sacked by Laporta two years ago after initially reversing a decision to resign.

Speaking to La Vanguardia, Xavi looked back on his time as coach with Barca, revealing Lionel Messi's re-signing from PSG was BLOCKED by Laporta at the time.

He began: "We laid a very good foundation for this project to continue. The backbone of the team is made up of Lamine, Pedri, Balde, Cubarsí, Fermín... people we believed in. It's one of the legacies I'm most proud of, beyond the two titles we won.

"We were a family in the dressing room, I've always been upfront with the players. Now you see Fermín, Lamine, who for me is already the best in the world, Raphinha, whom we changed position so he could attack the depth..."

Xavi also said: "Of course we did things wrong, we've done a lot of self-criticism, me personally and then with the staff through meetings. To summarise briefly, I'd say my expectations of the club decreased over time. While we were in control, the team kept improving, but as soon as they started making the decisions, and not by chance, it declined."

Laporta? I've been holding back

On Laporta, Xavi said: "He dismissed me as coach without telling me the truth, influenced by someone I believe is above the president, Alejandro Echevarría. In other words, it was Alejandro who dismissed me as coach.

"Alejandro tells me to come to the sports city and there I tell him that there is no problem, that I had already said that I was leaving and I had no need to continue.

"Laporta, who later also didn't tell the truth, convinced me to continue, he told me verbatim: 'Xavi, I don't see the team without you, I don't see the new Camp Nou without you, I don't see the 125th anniversary of the club without you as coach' and, since I still had motivation and saw a great future for the team with the generation of young players that was coming up, I felt capable."

On claims his squad were unfit, Xavi said: "There is data that shows that since 2003 no Barça team has run more than our league champion. We never lost due to physical issues. That was the story they told to get rid of me as coach.

"I've been holding back, but the president is saying I wanted ten players to leave, and that's not true. What I want is for the members to understand that this is happening within Barça, and honestly, the club needs a complete overhaul, from top to bottom, in terms of structure and professionalism..."

Messi wanted to re-sign

Xavi then moved onto Messi, stating: "The president isn't telling the truth there either. Leo was signed. In January 2023, after winning the World Cup, we got in touch and he told me he was excited about coming back, and I saw it. We talked until March and I told him, 'Well, when you give me the OK, I'll tell the president because I see it as a good fit for him from a footballing perspective.'

"The president started negotiating the contract with Leo's father and we had the green light from LaLiga, but it was the president who threw everything off.

"My interest is to tell the truth and Leo is not coming to Barça because the president doesn't want him to, not because of LaLiga or because Jorge Messi is asking for more money, that's a lie, it's the president and his people who are telling him no, that he can't afford it, that he has all the power and that Messi is going to mismanage that power."
