Xavi says his demise as Barcelona coach was due to allowing the players to drop standards.

Xavi was sacked at the end of his third season in charge of Barca.

He recalled when speaking to a college group: "My career there began with very high demands for the players and the club. They came from a stage in which there were not many and my mistake was keeping those standards so high for only one year.

"When I arrived we won the League, Super Cup...Then I was able to be self-critical and I said to myself: ‘Damn, what happened to me?'.

"I had lowered those high standards and the players no longer had the same attitude, the same respect, the same effort. The standards were lowering more and more to the point that in my last season we didn't win anything.

"I learned a lot from this. I had to be self-critical."
