Real Madrid legend Sergio Ramos is leaving Mexico's Monterrey ahead of the January market.

El Chiringuito is reporting the veteran defender won't be hanging up boots and instead will be seeking to make a late pitch for a place in Luis de la Fuente's Spain World Cup squad.

It's suggested the reasons for his decision are several, but two main ones are: family life in Mexico compared to Spain and the dream of playing in the World Cup.

The latter isn't far-fetched in Ramos' mind, as he believes that consistent playing time in a league closer to the Spanish style and in top-level competitions could convince De la Fuente to consider a call-up.

Ramos, who will turn 40 in March, last played for Spain in 2021 and was not called up by Luis Enrique for Euro 2020 or the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, nor by Luis de la Fuente for Euro 2024.
