Former Liverpool midfielder Thiago Alcantara has returned to Barcelona as an assistant coach to manager Hansi Flick.

The 34-year-old retired from football after departing Anfield in 2024 after making just one appearance in his final year at Liverpool under former manager Jurgen Klopp.

Thiago’s playing career saw him win trophies with Barca, Bayern Munich, Liverpool, and the Spanish national team over 16 years and he will now bring his wealth of experience to La Liga where he will work under Flick for the foreseeable. 

The news was confirmed by journalist Fabrizio Romano and the club website which showed pictures of Thiago pitchside as Barcelona trained. 

“First official day on the job for Thiago Alcántara as a member of the coaching staff. The former blaugrana player started work on the grass today as a member of the first team coaching staff as an assistant coach to Hansi Flick.  

“His role will involve helping with tactical aspects and preparing training sessions, among other things, bringing his experience and vision of the game to enrich the squad's day to day work.” 

Thiago was part of the Bayern Munich side that won the 2020 Champions League under Flick and the pair now reunite as the Catalan side fight to defend their league title. 

The club also confirmed that following Tuesday's session, players such as Rashford, Kounde, Raphinha, Christensen, Ronald Araujo and Roony Bardghji rejoined the squad on Thursday as they prepare to take on Valencia this weekend.
