Barca were thrashed 4-1 by Sevilla, with their former player Alexis Sanchez opening the scoring from the spot before Isaac Romero, Jose Carmona and Akor Adams also struck for the hosts.
Almeyda later said: "I'm very happy with the victory, because we needed to win at home. We haven't beaten Barça here in 10 years. We overcame so much negativity with battle and pride. I take with me the players' concentration and interpretation, and the joy this victory brought to everyone.
"We studied the match carefully. If we had given Barcelona too much space, they would have hurt us, because they always press aggressively. We had to sacrifice ourselves and then have the courage to play against one of the teams that presses the best. It's clear what we've been coaching, the strengths and weaknesses.
"We're on the right path. Every coach prepares his team to win. We won the last match without playing well, but we did it. Against Barcelona, we needed a perfect match, and everything went as planned. It's only three points, but with this attitude and desire, you can achieve important things; the real challenge will be to maintain them."
Almeyda concluded by discussing his plans after the international break.
He added, "We've been working as a group since day one. It's not enough to stop at victory; we have to enjoy the journey and approach it calmly. If someone had told me we'd get to this point, I would have come straight away... and I would have even swum to be there."
