The France captain was released from the squad by coach Didier Deschamps for their World Cup qualifier with Azerbaijan, citing a slight injury for the striker.
However, Mbappe was spotted in Dubai this week sparking claims in France that the Real star was fully fit.
In reaction, Rothen blasted on RMC Sport: “I’m shocked. I stand by that. It’s not even against Mbappé. I’m angry at the captain of any national team, and if it had been the captain of another national team, I would have torn him to shreds too.
"What I don’t understand is how Deschamps can let this happen. Either he’s in agreement with Mbappé and he does what he wants, but he should explain that to us. Is Deschamps capable of letting this happen? Otherwise, once again, I believe there must be answers. The other thing that shocks me, besides the lack of respect for the coach, is that you take a 6-hour and 15-minute flight instead of a 5-hour one (to Paris), so there’s no medical attention.
"The second thing that shocks me is that he's the captain and yet he feels entitled to skip the Azerbaijan match because it's a headache for him, just like some players who have gone before, and it must have been a headache for them too, even though they play 60 or 70 matches a season like Mbappé. That's the mindset of this new generation. A match for the French national team , whether it's a minor setback or not, is a source of pride. I have a hard time accepting this kind of behavior.
"And he doesn't even try to hide it. Like in Sweden. He didn't go to Iceland because he faked a sprained ankle, and three days later he was training. Now he has a minor injury, after his fantastic match against Ukraine, especially the first half, which was fantastic. Then he scores a penalty and makes an assist against cones, it's fantastic! But it's Mbappé, you can't say anything! People tell me I'm obsessing over it..."
