Former Real Madrid striker and general manager Pedja Mijatovic enjoyed Xabi Alonso's selection shake-up for victory at Real Oviedo on Sunday.

Xabi started the game with Vini Jr on the bench and Rodrygo Goes in his XI on the night.

Mijatovic told Cadena SER: "There is a lot of competition. That is good, but it can also sometimes cause a problem for the coach on duty. And keeping everyone happy with the important minutes is always good in every season. There has been talk this summer about the possibility of many departures, especially for Rodrygo, but at the moment he is there and we see that the coach is counting on him. Furthermore, he is proving it.

"I think it's a good strategy Xabi Alonso have all the players with many minutes and keep them alive because there are many games and a lot of competition. And that's football. Modern football requires something like that.

"I'm liking Madrid and I'm liking the work that Xabi Alonso is doing. Nobody has their position assured. And that in today's football is very important because there are many games. All players have to be well placed in the training process, in matches, and have minutes...

"Only two days have passed, but Xabi Alonso he is clear. Courtois and Mbappé. The rest of us are there. The difference is this."

Mijatovic also assessed the situation of Vinicius Jr at Real Madrid.

He added, "Vinicius needs to bring out his personality and character. And that makes a lot of them a little angry. He had his place with (Carlo) Ancelotti very assured, he will surely also have it in the Brazilian team... but at Real Madrid we already see that Xabi does not care what he has done so far and he does care about what he can do from now on. And that seems very good to me."
