Former Real Madrid midfielder Luis Milla says the team lacks a genuine midfield general.

Milla isn't convinced by Fede Valverde and believes Real need to go out in the market this summer find something special.

“Those we have now have their own characteristics and perform their roles very well, but I do believe we need a player who understands what the team needs at any given moment," said Milla, who played over 200 games for Real Madrid between 1990 and 1997.

"Whether it's a direct pass, a horizontal one, a more vertical one... Someone who sees the first attacking option and knows how to control the tempo of the game.”

He also told AS: "Since (Toni) Kroos and (Luka) Modric left, it seems that this type of player is needed, but not just any player. Someone like the German or the Croatian, or Vitinha at PSG, Pedri, (Martin) Zubimendi…”

However, in his opinion, the winter transfer window had limitations, and the problem isn't solved by signing players for the sake of signing them.

“It has to be an excellent player; just any player won't do,” Milla continued.

“A central midfielder not only organizes, he has all his teammates around him and must also set the tone for when to press.

“It doesn’t matter if you try to keep possession or wait to counter-attack quickly, that type of player is the one who will help adapt to what the team needs.

“That’s why I think people still remember Kroos or Modric, because it’s not so easy to find players who have such a special sense of football.

“I think the first thing the coach has to do is convince the players, and then we can talk about technique or tactics.”
