Zabarelli is regarded as one of the most exciting youngsters in Brazil, but his Italian passport would allow for Barcelona to sign him before his 18th birthday.
Sporting director Deco is understood to be pushing to get the move done as the club seek to expand their business in South America.
Zabarelli is currently training with German side Stuttgart on a short-term basis, while Ajax and Benfica have also expressed strong interest in signing the youngster.
