Bernal was urged to join Girona on-loan at the start of the season in order to be guaranteed a regular game.
However, the young midfielder chose to stay with Barca and has since exceed expectations, making 27 appearances and scoring five goals this term.
"From the beginning, I knew I wanted to stay. I've been here for many years, it's the club of my life, and I've made the right decision. I wouldn't have experienced these moments anywhere else," he told Sport.
Bernal recovered from knee surgery last year and is now in talks over a new deal after penning an initial contract to 2029 during his rehab.
Such has been his impact, that Barca are now in the process of rewriting his agreement, in order to recognise his form and progress.
