Deco argues the comparisons with Messi and expectations around 18 year-old Yamal far exceed what the Argentine great went through as he making his way at Barca.
He said on Radio SER Cataluyna: "Regarding the comparisons with Messi, I would say that Leo developed without so much pressure and earned his place, while Lamine had to play for a Barça that was still under construction.
"Every player is different. Lamine meets all the requirements we ask of him as a Barça player. We don't interfere in personal matters."
The sporting director also sought to end all talk of Messi returning from Inter Miami next month. It had been suggested the former Barca captain could sign on-loan in order to keep himself sharp for the World Cup next summer.
But Deco stated: "It was never considered. He has a contract, he will have a lifelong impact on Barcelona, but it's not something we're talking about.
"It's normal for his name to be invoked by fans. It's impossible not to remember Messi's goals and plays."
