It’s been just over a month since Rashford landed in Barcelona, and the media circus is well underway. Catalan outlet El Nacional had reported that the club had already warned the England international he needs to ‘mentally and physically’.
That report has since been rubbished by several ‘in the know’ reporters, including Fabrizio Romano, who colourfully described such rumours as ‘bullsh*t’, but it just goes to show, wherever the 27-year-old goes, the vulture will soon come pecking.
On the pitch is where it really matters, and Rashford has it in him to be a huge success at Barcelona, despite all the inevitable and unfortunate noise surrounding him.
An Unlikely Union?
Admittedly, it wasn’t the ideal start for club and player. It’s no secret that Barcelona’s top targets from that left-wing position were Nico Williams and Luis Diaz, but for several reasons, mostly financial, neither of those deals happened.
Ruben Amorim made it as clear as day that Rashford was done at Old Trafford in December, and the player expressed a desire for a ‘new challenge’ before joining Aston Villa on loan in the next month.
Barcelona were reportedly interested in bringing him in before he joined Villa, but their ongoing money troubles made a deal impossible. Few believed Rashford deserved such a move when it started looking more likely, but the Spanish club have had a long-term interest in the forward.
The club clearly have a lot of faith in Rashford having committed to paying his massive £325,000-a-week wages in full, although it is understood that he took a slight pay-cut to make the move happen. Still, it’s not easy for Barca to do that.
A £30 million option to buy next summer feels achievable too, but Rashford will have to prove he’s worth it.
Early Signs at Barcelona
After scoring a combined 94 goals across all competitions last season, along with providing 46 assists along the way, supplanting and one of Barcelona’s incredibly impressive front three would be hard for anyone.
Rashford was overall impressive during Barcelona’s pre-season, getting off the mark and adapting to his new teammates. Scoring his first goal in the 5-0 friendly win over South Korean side Daegu FC would have done is confidence a world of good.
He got a fantastic assist in their next game against Como, another 5-0 win, setting Raphinha up following an impressive run that saw Rashford leave his marker for dust. It was what came next, he was less happy with.
Yamal played him through perfectly, Rashford then rounded the Como ‘keeper only to miss the open goal and put it just wide. Raphinha was stood a few feet away with his head in his hands in disbelief. Rashford played it off with a smile but was unable to redeem himself after Flick substituted him at half-time.
Barcelona’s start to their La Liga title defence has so far been underwhelming. A 3-0 away win over Mallorca in their first game is somewhat undermined by the fact the home side had two players sent off before half-time.
Rashford was handed his first start on matchday two but was hooked off at half-time and replaced by Dani Olmo when Barcelona found themselves 2-0 down. They went on to come back and win 3-2, but it would be unfair to pin that on the Englishman’s withdrawal.
He had a 100% pass accuracy rate, created two chances and six touches in the opposition box, so it was more of a tactical shift than a poor performance.
Future Plans Under Hansi Flick
Rashford was signed to help provide cover for Raphinha on the left wing, but that’s not all he can do. His versatility will help him fill in anywhere across the front line, and even in the number ten should the need arise.
Flick clearly has a thing for these types of players. Ferran Torres, who was unwanted by Barcelona before the German was appointed has become a valuable squad player, playing 1,100 minutes in their 2024-25 La Liga campaign, although it’s understood the club view him as more of a number nine.
While Raphinha and Yamal offer plenty of attacking threat with their trickery, intelligent passing, and close control, particularly against low blocks, Rashford offers a more direct alternative for Flick.
His arrival also offers Raphinha to play in the number ten role. While Yamal is a more traditional winger, the Brazilian tends to drift inside and operate in the gap between the left centre-back and the left back.
He excels in one-one-one situations, using his pace to catch opposition defenders out on the counter. He’s only played 94 La Liga minutes, but has three successful dribbles, nine touches in the opposition box, and is yet to be dispossessed.
That can be deployed against sides that aren’t as scared to take Barcelona on rather than sit everyone behind the ball, perhaps in the Champions League.
Raphinha is the prime example Flick can provide to the Barca fans and board members regarding his ability to get the best out of players. It’s understood the German was key in getting the deal for Rashford done and pushed for him to join before their pre-season tour of Asia to give him the best chance of bringing him back to his best.
Verdict
Adapting new a new league and a club as unique as Barcelona will take Rashford some time, especially considering he spent his entire career, up until January, at one club. It’s evident he has a new manager who has a lot of faith in him, and a club that is willing to give him a chance.
There is a lot of football to be played between now and the end of the season, writing him off this early is not only foolish, but based on little to no evidence.
