Safonov has had to largely play second fiddle to Lucas Chevalier this season, but Roche says he now deserves an extended chance to prove himself the team's outright No1.
"We must remember the sixth title of the season, nothing else, and Safonov's outstanding performance. You have to know how to win without being perfect," he told L'Equipe.
"He has earned his starting spot for a few more weeks. He wouldn't understand why he was dropped from the starting eleven.
"A debate is going to begin, and only Luis Enrique can decide."
