Former England striker Wayne Rooney has hit back at Steven Gerrard who claimed their squad was filled with ego.

Rooney and Gerrard both played in six major tournaments for England but failed to go further than quarter-finals at World Cups and Euros despite having vast quality in the side that many believe should have at least reached a final.

Gerrard claimed that "hatred" between Liverpool and Manchester United players was part of the reason they never succeeded and made headlines as he stated that the squad was filled with “egotistical losers”.

Rooney has now responded to the former Liverpool captain’s claims and as he spoke on The Wayne Rooney Show.

"I wouldn't say better attitude. That's disrespectful to us as players because we worked hard, we tried.

"What you have now is players (from rival teams) training (together) before they go back for pre-season - Phil Foden and Marcus Rashford, for instance. It's a different generation.

"It (was) difficult to have that relationship with Liverpool and Man Utd players.

"It's easier now. I speak to Steven all the time.

"I was aware that Becks and Gary Neville and Scholesy, you could see they weren't going to be close to the Liverpool players. But one thing is for sure - everyone worked hard for each other.”

The likes of David Beckham, Steven Gerrard, Paul Scholes, Frank Lampard, Gary Neville, Rio Ferdinand, Wayne Rooney, John Terry and Jamie Carragher all made up what was a world class England squad.

England’s wait for a first major international trophy in the men’s game since 1966 continues and with the World Cup coming up next year, many will hope that the Three Lions don’t flop once again despite their remarkable quality.
