In a wide-ranging interview with Portugal’s Channel 11, Mourinho gave his thoughts on Sir Jim Ratcliffe at Manchester United, Viktor Gyokeres to Arsenal and finally Guardiola’s tactics at City which he thinks needs to change.
The Fenerbahce boss called out Guardiola for playing out from the back when he joined City and quickly replaced Joe Hart with the likes of Ederson and Claudio Bravo.
“If you die with your idea, you're stupid. Coaches have to adapt their ideas to what they have.
“Playing from the back with a wooden goalkeeper is complicated. I remember Guardiola had Hart, the best English goalkeeper.
“But he wanted Claudio Bravo, but that wasn't enough. So he signed Ederson.”
Last season an ageing and injury-hit City squad were making uncharacteristic mistakes and lacked the confidence needed to forge their way into the title race as Liverpool cruised to victory. Guardiola put it perfectly after the first-leg defeat by Real Madrid: "It doesn't work like it worked in the past."
Mourinho knows what it is like to have failing tactics and knows that City need to change their tune especially after their brutal loss in the Club World Cup to Al-Hilal. The question is whether Guardiola will listen and will change his tactical style which is not working in the modern day anymore.
