Cristian Romero faces an anxious wait over his fitness ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after suffering a worrying injury during Tottenham Hotspur’s clash with Sunderland.

The Argentine defender was involved in a heavy collision with goalkeeper Antonin Kynsky, leaving him needing lengthy treatment before exiting the pitch in tears.

Early reports suggest a serious knee injury, casting doubt over his availability for next summer’s tournament in the United States, Canada and Mexico.

Roberto De Zerbi told the club’s official website: “We will know more about the extent of Romero’s injury in the coming days.”

Argentina, drawn in Group J alongside Algeria, Austria and Jordan, will be monitoring his condition closely as they prepare for the competition.
