Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe admits they're disappointed with their recent FA Cup record ahead of Saturday's clash with Bournemouth.

Newcastle host the Cherries at St James' Park in tomorrow's third round.

While Carabao Cup holders, Howe concedes they've failed to reach the same heights in the FA Cup.

He said this morning: "We haven't quite matched the success in the Carabao Cup and it is a frustration for us. The FA Cup is a great competition and the early rounds are more difficult for us. We want to progress and do well in every competition and we can't have our eyes focused on the Man City game."

Asked about how his team will line-up after the midweek thriller against Leeds United, Howe admits there'll be rotations.

He continued: "I have to compliment the players fitness wise. We have been really good this year when you consider the multi competitions and the schedule.

"If you look at the other day I thought we were the stronger team at the end of the game physically so I have to praise the players and the sports science team. I think we will have to rotate the team and we have done that all season. We will review this game and make the right selections."

Facing Bournemouth in-form

As mentioned, Newcastle will go into the tie flying after their stunning 4-3 Premier League win against Leeds.

Howe said: "We have been searching for confidence and consistency and the players will feel energised and boosted by three wins.

"We can't relax and stop and the momentum has to continue through the next games we have. We will pick a strong team while trusting the squad. In no way will we want to do anything other than winning the game and getting through."

Market plans

Beyond the FA Cup, Howe was also asked about the progress being made by Newcastle in the January transfer window.

He began: "At the moment we are taking a watching brief. We will see how we go in the next few games and that will have a bearing on what we do."

It's been suggested Newcastle will seek to sign a defender with Dan Burn hit by injury.

Howe continued: "We have to get a definitive assessment on the scale of the injury. Let's see with Dan and other options we have internally and we will make a decision."

With several defenders currently sidelined, Howe concedes club captain Jamaal Lascelles is another not yet ready to return. Indeed, the defender may've played his last game for the club.

"He is not training with us currently. He hasn't felt well enough physically to train. I don't think he is injured particularly but his body isn't ready. There is a possibilty he could leave but Jamaal has been an excellent leader for us over the years behind the scenes."
