Michael Carrick is set to become the Manchester United interim manager until the end of the season.

Both Carrick and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer were spoken to by United officials over the past week as the United board searched for a replacement for former manager Ruben Amorim

The club hasn’t made a final decision on the appointment yet, but journalist Ben Jacobs has reported on Monday afternoon that the Red Devils will see Carrick appointed over the coming days.

“BREAKING: Manchester United expected to appoint Michael Carrick as caretaker in time to manage the Manchester Derby.

“Carrick the preferred choice over Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, as revealed yesterday.

“Formal steps now being taken, with an announcement likely within 48 hours, potentially as early as Tuesday.”

Since Amorim’s sacking, United have had disappointing results, including a 2-2 draw at Burnley and a disappointing home FA Cup defeat at the hands of Brighton and Hove Albion.

The FA Cup elimination means the 13-time winners have been dumped from the competition and the League Cup at the first opportunity for a first time since 1981-82, signalling their desperate need for new management.

Solskjaer had a three-year spell as United manager between 2018 and 2021 but is set to miss out on the opportunity to Carrick, who assisted him as a coach during his tenure.

Carrick will be announced ahead of Saturday's Premier League clash against Manchester City at Old Trafford in what should be his first game in charge.
