Malen scored twice in the first half of the 2-1 win which sent Villa to third in the Europa League table, just below Lyon and FC Midtjylland. However, the result was put to one side as the away fans clashed with police and caused mayhem on the pitch.
As reported by the BBC, Malen was struck on the head by a plastic cup thrown from the away end while he was celebrating his 27th-minute opener. His head was cut, but he did not receive medical treatment, as he got away without serious harm.
Young Boys captain Loris Benito went over to the fans in a bid to calm them down but his plan did not work as fans continued to throw objects on to the pitch, near Villa players who took a step back.
Supporters were fined €28,250 for a similar incident at Manchester City, and around €18,000 for the use of pyrotechnics at Celtic in February. The side also had to play behind closed doors against Inter Milan after the use of pyrotechnics in what is a common theme for the side.
Young Boys are in 26th place with six points from five games while Villa sit at the opposite end of the table which may have sparked frustration from ultras.
“It’s normal when you score, you want to be with your teammates,” Young Boys manager Seoane said after the game. “Maybe it was a small provocation (by Malen), I don’t know. Maybe our fans took it this way. But our fans should not react so heavily.
“The referee asked our captain to go with the supporters, and he was going there to calm (them down) a bit. Some supporters came down to have a talk, and some police reacted like they were going to jump on the pitch, but this was not the intention.
“It’s a pity (to go) from the provocation to thinking they would jump on the pitch. And the result is not nice for anybody. We apologise, I don’t feel good. It’s not how we want to act when we are guests somewhere, and I think nobody wins and I think everybody loses from this situation.”
