Feyenoord coach Robin van Persie insists he was happy with his players in defeat at home to Europa League opponents Aston Villa.

Feyenoord forced eight saves from Villa goalkeeper Marco Bizot, though ended up losing 2-0 on the night.

Van Persie said afterwards: "We performed really well, in terms of defending high. We won so many balls (by doing that). In possession we played well and created a lot of chances... (there weren't) a lot of chances against us.

"I also think we played really well in the second half, so it's a bit of a strange feeling to be standing here with a 2-0 loss because, in my opinion, we deserved more.

"I care about how we play, how we defend, how we attack, and that was spot on tonight.

"We showed a lot of courage in the way we attacked and a lot of composure on the ball. We created so many chances. Overall, I have a really positive feeling.

"I didn't have a positive feeling about our (Matchday 1) game in Braga (1-0 defeat), because in that game we didn't perform well. Tonight we did, so we have to keep going and the results will follow."
