Oxford United have signed Tottenham Hotspur striker Will Lankshear on a season-long loan as he aims to find minutes.

The 20-year-old made his first team debut back in October, and scored on his second appearance for the club, away against Galatasaray in a Europa League clash in what has been a dramatic rise through the academy in recent years.

Lankshear brings more than just goals

The England Under-20 international joined Tottenham in 2022 after coming through both Arsenal and Sheffield United’s academies to establish himself as one of the best young strikers in the country. Having also spent the second half of last season playing in the Championship for West Bromwich Albion, Lankshear feels like he is ready for a new challenge as he spoke on his latest move.

“This is a really exciting opportunity for me to be joining a great Club,” Lankshear said after signing. “I learned so much last season in the first team at Tottenham and West Brom and I’m ready to now kick on with Oxford United

“I’ve had some really good conversations with the manager, and I feel like this is the right place for me to be.

“I love nothing more than scoring goals. I want to do my best to bring as many as I can this season.

“My game is about more than just goals though. I’m a player that has taken all the information from the top professionals I’ve worked with and I’m now ready to bring it together, work hard for the team and deliver for the Club.”

Rowett believes Lankshear has what it takes to succeed at Oxford

Head Coach, Gary Rowett also commented on the deal for the forward who will gain first-team experience away from Tottenham once more in an attempt to grow as a player who could feature for the North London side in the near future.

“Will is an athletic, strong, quick goalscorer and someone who we feel can make an immediate impact.

“He has an outstanding record at youth level with club and country. He knows the way to goal, and we hope he can add those qualities to our team.

“With Nik Prelec and Will added to the squad in recent days, we are really pleased with the work that has been done to strengthen the forward line for the new season.”

Lankshear must be cautious as teammate Dane Scarlett was loaned to Oxford last season and made 20 appearances in total for Oxford between August and January, scoring four goals. However, the young forward was only given 788 minutes, which is an average of just under 40 minutes per game which may send a warning to Lankshear who could struggle to find minutes.
