The Magpies have sold the likes of Alexander Isak, Sean Longstaff and Martin Dubravka this summer in permanent deals and now say goodbye to 19-year-old midfielder Hernes who makes his move to the Eredivisie.
Hernes joined United in September 2023 from Shrewsbury Town, and scored on his professional debut at just 16 years old during an EFL Trophy clash against Wolverhampton Wanderers.
He now joins Dutch side FC Groningen on loan for the 2025/26 season and the club released a short statement welcoming him in to the club.
“FC Groningen hires midfielder Travis Hernes from Newcastle United, England. The 19-year-old Norwegian finishes the current season in Euroborg. The Pride of the North has stipulated in the lease an option to buy to take over the youth international after this season.
“Hernes immediately join the first selection of head coach Dick Lukkien and will play in Groningen with number 7.”
As stated, Groningen have the option to buy him permanently which means manager Eddie Howe may be letting the youngster go if he impresses abroad. Shrewsbury Town also included a 20% sell-on clause as part of his move to the North East two years ago in what could be a huge deal next year.
