Former Man City and Chelsea winger Raheem Sterling has admitted he is determined to reach his "old level" following his first Feyenoord start.

The 31-year-old joined the Dutch giants as a free agent after his reported £325,000 per-week contract at Chelsea was torn up.

Having not played regular first team football for over a year, Sterling has been gradually introduced to Feyenoord’s starting eleven.

Sterling made his first start in their 3-3 Eredivisie draw with NAC Breda but was brought off in the 63rd minute.

Speaking to ESPN after the game, he insisted he could have played for longer, saying: "I felt good enough to continue, but it is the coach's choice.

"Every player wants to stay on. You want to stay on the pitch. It is understandable that it is not yet possible. It is another new step in the right direction."

"We would have liked to win," Sterling continued.

“We have mixed feelings about the performance. It was very inconsistent, but at times also very good.

“I want to get back to my old level. It was a nice attack from our side. We have to keep working on it and then more will follow."
