According to a report from the Daily Mail, Palace sent scouts to keep an eye on the 19-year-old’s progress with current club AZ Alkmaar.
It’s understood that Palace will face heavy competition for Smit’s signature, with Barcelona and Chelsea also interested, alongside United and Real Madrid.
While signing Smit would prove to be quite the coup, Palace are hopeful that their ability to off the attacking midfielder a clear pathway into the first team will help sway him.
Smit has been compared to former Man City legend Kevin de Bruyne, and has so far scored one goal and provided two assists in his six Eredivisie games so far this season.
