The Cameroonian international was loaned to Trabzonspor earlier this season after a disappointing EFL Cup match against Grimsby Town proved to be the final nail in the coffin.
He is due to report for pre-season training with the Red Devils after his loan ends as he joins interim boss Michael Carrick’s side who have flourished with Senne Lammens between the sticks.
The 23-year-old Belgian shot-stopper’s presence has proven to be a real improvement on Onana who has struggled in Turkey since making the move.
Carrick praised the young keeper earlier this season who quickly became a fan favourite.
“You want a goalkeeper to be reliable, trustworthy and, instead of creating the chaos, you want him to take the chaos away and calm things down,” said the interim manager. “I think Senne is that. He’s quite quiet at times and unassuming, but he’s got a real steeliness. To step in, it’s a big role – for some.”
However, despite his struggles, The Guardian report that Onana is keen on working his way back into the United side and believes that he has a strong chance at claiming back his spot.
During the reigns of both Ruben Amorim and Erik ten Hag, United relied on Altay Bayindir and Andre Onana who were both as unreliable as each other throughout both manager’s tenure.
Onana’s loan ends in May, and it will be interesting to see if Carrick hands him a chance alongside Lammens, something many United fans will be wary of.
