Chris Wilder was sacked in the summer following Sheffield United’s Championship play-off final defeat to Sunderland and it now reportedly set to replace Selles who was let go after a 5-0 defeat to Ipswich Town on Friday night.
Selles, who was sacked as Hull boss a month before his arrival in Bramall Lane in June became the first EFL boss axed this season and The Blades must find a replacement before they face Charlton Athletic on Saturday afternoon.
The Daily Mail report that Wilder took charge of training this week in what is a bold move for the club as they prepare to appoint him. Wilder has two promotions with Sheffield United on his CV, and he led them into the Premier League in 2019 after coming second in the Championship. If appointed he could bring confidence back to a side who sit dead bottom of the league on 0 points with 11 goals conceded and just 1 scored.
Wilder led them to third in the Championship and a haul of 90 points last season before heartbreak struck when they lost 2-1 to Sunderland in the play-off final after Thomas Watson's 95th-minute winner. United have just a few days before the Charlton game and many fans feel like boyhood fan Wilder is the perfect man for the job.
