Liverpool are reportedly set to cut short James McConnell’s loan spell at Ajax, with several Championship clubs circling ahead of the January transfer window.

The 21-year-old academy graduate made his senior debut for the Reds in 2024 and secured a season-long loan to the Dutch giants after signing a five-year contract with his boyhood club in the summer.

The move initially promised regular playing time under John Heitinga, who had previously assisted Arne Slot at Ajax

However, following Heitinga’s departure, McConnell’s opportunities have been limited, featuring in just seven matches over the past six months and being left out of recent first-team selections.

Liverpool are concerned about his stalled development and are considering recalling him in January. According to reports, if McConnell returns, he could secure a fresh loan move, with Championship clubs including West Brom, Derby, Oxford United, and Swansea expressing interest.
