Following Liam Rosenior’s dismissal as head coach last week, the Chelsea board are looking over every option as they aim to bring in a new head coach ahead of the new season.
Lampard, who just lifted the Championship title with Coventry, is a name linked with the Chelsea role as his former side keep a close eye on his success.
Coventry have scored eight goals since confirming promotion as they continue to dominate the Championship. Now, as Lampard is constantly linked, Cole believes that his former teammate should avoid a return at all costs.
“Frank should stay away from it. The temptation for Frank, because he loves the club, would be to come back and give it another whirl.
“He’s done a fantastic job at Coventry. Nobody would have backed Coventry for promotion at the start of the season. He’s got a real challenge keeping them in the league next season. All of his focus and mental energy now should be about recruitment. He should be identifying five, six, seven players he wants (for Coventry).
“If I was him, I wouldn’t go to Chelsea. In any job, you’re being judged on your results but (at Chelsea) you don’t have full control over what you can do. That’s insane.”
Rosenior was sacked by Chelsea after three-and-a-half months after he replaced Enzo Maresca earlier this season in a role that seems cursed for anyone who steps into it.
