Manchester United legend Dwight Yorke has suggested that Aston Villa star Morgan Rogers should not be signed simply because he is popular.

At the age of 23, Rogers has contributed seven goals and five assists in all competitions for Villa so far this season under manager Unai Emery, who is aiming for the title this season.

The England star has been linked with both Chelsea and Manchester United now that the January window has opened, with reports suggesting that the Red Devils may make a move in the summer.

Villa are currently in a better spot to qualify for the Champions League compared to both United and Chelsea at the moment, and as transfer links grow.

Speaking to FootItalia, Yorke has suggested that United stay away from Rogers, who he believes has talent but it simply popular due to his recent form.

“There are a few candidates out there, but I can see why Morgan Rogers is mentioned,” Yorke said. “He is the flavour of the month at the moment, and everyone is trying to pounce on that.

“I'm not really a great believer in that (looking beyond the stat sheet),” he continued.

“I look a little bit deeper into the soul of the player to see if he will really fulfil that sort of area when it comes to United, because of the magnitude of the team he is going to play for.”

If United did make a move for Rogers, they would likely face stiff competition from Chelsea, who are said to be open to making a bid of £100M plus for the young playmaker.
