Tottenham defender Micky Van de Ven has been told by Netherlands teammate Elia that he should be thinking about his future.

The Netherlands international currently has three-and-a-half years left on his current deal in North London, which expires in the summer of 2029.

Despite the club’s poor form in recent seasons, the defender has been an ever-present at the heart of their backline under a number of managers who only have positive things to say about the Dutchman.

Now, with the winter window closed and the summer window approaching, many are speculating about his future, especially as Spurs are set to miss out on Champions League football.

Elia, his international teammate, was asked about Van de Ven this week and spoke honestly about how he should consider his many options in the coming months.

"I think Van de Ven has to finish the season at Tottenham (by playing) consistently and show everybody he can go to the next level. He's strong and has good posture. He can score, he can dribble, and he can defend," he said, according to The Daily Star.

"If he continues like this, I think after the World Cup, he can make a good step to the bigger clubs. Not that Tottenham isn't a big club, but clubs that are a step above, like Real Madrid and Liverpool. I think it fits his career to move from Tottenham to the big teams."

The defender has been a revelation at Tottenham, but it may be time for him to move on to a side such as Liverpool who have been reportedly interested in the 24 year old for over a year.
