Wirtz joined the Reds in an initial £100m deal from Bayer Leverkusen as he rejected Bayern Munich as well as Manchester City in what was one of the biggest deals of the summer.
While the Premier League champions have enjoyed an unbeaten start to the season, with five wins out five, the German international has been ridiculed for his lack of goal contributions despite his impressive performances.
Rummenigge, who was formerly the CEO at Bayern has spoken on the midfielder who he believes should have stayed in the Bundesliga where he thinks he would be more comfortable.
"I have to say honestly, in the case of Florian Wirtz, it still hurts, because I believe the player would have been better off at Bayern than at Liverpool.
“We could have signed Woltemade. But I also have to say: Bayern Munich are wise enough not to engage in every kind of financial madness.
"I’ve always said, 'We want to achieve sporting success, but please, in a serious and financially sound way. We have a top team, this year as well. And when the three players who are currently injured come back soon, then we’ll have a great team.'"
Wirtz made 140 Bundesliga appearances for Leverkusen, scoring 35 and bagging 45 assists under then manager Xabi Alonso. It is too early to say whether his Liverpool move has been a success but what is clear is that he is still adapting to the Premier League.
The Reds face Crystal Palace this weekend and with Hugo Ekitike suspended, Alexander Isak will take his place. This could allow Wirtz better chances of snatching an assist given Isak’s knack for goals as the midfielder tries to find his first involvement.
