Arsenal hearts were broken in Budapest following a 4-3 penalty shootout defeat to PSG in the Champions League final.

Kai Havertz sent the travelling Gunners into dreamland when his sixth-minute strike rippled the roof of the net. PSG then equalised in the second half from the penalty spot through Ballon d'Or winner Ousmane Dembele.

In a contest largely dominated by PSG, neither side could find a winner and the game was decided on penalties as Gabriel Magalhaes' missed spot kick gave the French side a 4-3 win in the shootout and their second successive Champions League crown.

To many, the trophy went to its rightful owner as Luis Enrique's side accumulated a 1.73 xG to Arsenal's 0.5 and 21 shots on goal to the Gunners' seven across 120 minutes of action.

Arsenal's game plan was to always sit back and stifle their world-class opponents by playing in a low block and hitting them on the counterattack.

Mikel Arteta almost executed it to perfection until the lottery of a penalty shootout, and former Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson has slammed the North London side as "boring".

According to L'Equipe, Ferguson sent a message to PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaïfi after the game, which read: “Nasser, this is Alex Ferguson. Well done, it was a tough night for you, but you played against a boring team that did nothing but defend. Enjoy your holidays, you deserve it.”

Ferguson had an intense rivalry with former Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger during a nearly three-decade stay at Old Trafford, so these comments will come as no surprise to anyone.
