Arsenal defender William Saliba spoke ahead of the club's Champions League clash with Monaco this week.

Arsenal welcome Monaco to the Emirates on Wednesday night, one day after defender Saliba signed a new deal with the club, which will only boost their morale on the back of their win over Newcastle United at the weekend.

Saliba is aiming for trophies with Arsenal

The Frenchman spoke after manager Mikel Arteta on Tuesday’s press conference and was first spoke on signing a new five-year contract and other players signing new deals including Ethan Nwaneri and Miles Lewis-Skelly

"I'm so happy to sign a new deal with my club. I hope to keep going like this with the team to win some trophies.

"Of course. The only thing that we're missing here is winning trophies. We all believe in the project and the future. We have a good squad, good staff and a good coach, so we are close to that shifting.

“We have to keep going like we are to make sure that we're going to win some trophies."

Saliba ignores interest from Real Madrid

The 24-year-old was next questioned on if he received any interest from other clubs after reports claimed that Real Madrid were interested in luring him away from North London.

"To be honest, I wasn't really focused on the clubs outside because I was just focused on here. I knew I wanted to stay here for more years, so I wasn't really focused on the other clubs. I'm fully focused on my club."

Finishing second has made Saliba "angry"

Finally, he opened up on the final steps that need to be in place to win a trophy under head coach Mikel Arteta, which has eluded the Spaniard since winning the Community Shield in 2023.

"We are always close, but if we don't win, it's because we're missing something. Every year we are getting better and we have taken a lot of experiences from the last three seasons.

"We have always been close, but now we know how the Premier League and Champions League is, so we have to stop talking and prove on the pitch that we are ready to win.

"I've been here for three years and every season you finish second you get a bit more angry. You want to be able to go on your holidays and celebrate the trophies that you've won with your club, so when you finish second the holidays are not so good."
