Luciano Spalletti was at his performative best for Juventus' 2-0 Champions League win against Jose Mourinho's Benfica last night.

Two big-talking points came from the game involving Juve's coach.

First, when the match was still 0-0, with Benfica threatening in attack, Spalletti didn't appreciate the criticism of his players from a fan sitting in the front rows of the stadium.

Spalletti himself clarified the incident in a press conference: "I didn't say anything to him afterward. Every time we missed a ball, he said, 'Spalletti, take him off,' 'Spalletti, take him off,' to everyone.

"I told him, 'Look, I have five substitutions,' and then I didn't look back. It was a constant thing throughout the match. I turned around and told him I can't replace them all, but it was natural. It was natural. It was a fair exchange."

Then came a curious incident midway through the second half. Spalletti slapped Lois Openda before the player went on (replacing Jonathan David) and said, "You have to wake up." He smiled and then stepped onto the pitch.

Post-match, former Juve captain Alessandro Del Piero also commented on the incident: "If a coach allows himself to do something like this, it's because his relationship with the player allows it; there's a lot of communication."
