Manchester City defender Marc Guehi has revealed he was confused by the boos he received against Liverpool.

The England centre-back received a harsh reception from the majority of spectators within Anfield during the 2-1 victory for City which saw goals from Bernardo Silva and Erling Haaland seal a late comeback.

Why was Guehi booed?

Guehi was on the brink of a transfer to Liverpool last summer, only for his former club, Crystal Palace to pull the plug in the final moments of the transfer window.

The defender was booed throughout the game and admitted that he wasn’t sure why he received so much hate over an issue he could not control last year.

"Yeah, I'm not sure why, to be honest.

"But I can't control what their fans think of me. I'm just grateful to our fans for sticking by me and supporting me the whole game."

“It’s not easy. Fans are on top of you. “You play against a team that likes to press high, but it’s always about the next action. You might make a mistake, but the next one. Always focused on the next action and how you can help your teammates."

Slot furious over Guehi decision

Liverpool boss Arne Slot also argued that Guehi avoided a “clear red card” for a shirt pull on Mohamed Salah in the second half. This may have sparked tensions amongst the crowd who were already displeased with Guehi’s failed move.

“That’s the rulebook and you follow the rulebook, and if you follow the rulebook and you have a clear shirt pull from Guehi on Mo Salah, who’s for eight years scoring that ball every single time.

“One-hundred out of 100 times he scores that goal, and that’s not a red card, then there is more of my frustration."

City now sits six points adrift of Arsenal in the battle for the Premier League title whilst the champions are now desperately trying to catch up and claim a Champions League spot.
