Paris St-Germain retained their Champions League crown as Arsenal defender Gabriel misses the decisive spot-kick in a penalty shootout on Saturday night in what was a heartbreaking final for the Gunners.
The victory makes the French champions the first club to successfully defend the trophy since Real Madrid's dominant three-year run between 2016 and 2018.
Arsenal entered their first Champions League final for 20 years and came away trophyless. The North London side could not handle the pressure in the shoot out, despite arguably being the best side in the early stages of the tournament.
Speaking on The Rest is Football podcast, Lineker believes that PSG deserved to win and that 3 teams have a better claim as the best sides on the planet.
"It was obviously disappointing for Arsenal, but I do think the best team in the tournament has won again. Looking at the game as a fan with no skin in the game, I think Arsenal had to play that way because they wouldn’t have beaten PSG any other way, but at the same time I think football won.
"I know there are all different sort of ways to play and there’s nothing wrong with playing defensively. But at the same time football is entertainment and you want to see teams that are really positive, creative and have the best players and play wonderful football. I think this season those three teams have been PSG, Bayern Munich and Barcelona.
"Arsenal are brilliant defensively and PSG didn’t create much because they’re so organised, but I think as a neutral it was a positive result for football. I think in terms of how football should be played, the best team won."
Arsenal concluded their European campaign unbeaten across 90 minutes and extra time, until the penalty shoot out ended their European dreams. As the World Cup approaches, players will now turn their heads towards international football as they try to refocus ahead of this summer.
